Led by Dr. Mark Cucuzzella and Dr. Josh Emdur

We are proud to introduce a completely new approach to medical care.

We’ll partner you, online, with a primary care doctor who really gets to know you, listens to you, and has time for you. And not just any doctor. A doctor that is a runner just like you and who understands the things that are important to both casual runners and advanced runners. Things like your training plan, nutrition, shoes, running form, and common injuries.

Dr. Josh is now accepting a limited number of patients. You’ll get the dedicated personal attention of a doctor who is expert in serving runners. Securely text your doctor for a quick answer. Appointments over phone and video chat.  True preventative care tailored to your medical needs and lifestyle.

How it Works

1) Reserve Your Spot

Provide your info and put your credit card on file. When we’re ready to take you on as a patient, we’ll let you know. Your credit card won’t be charged until after you’ve had your first online appointment with us.

2) Have Your First Appointment

We’ll spend about an hour talking via two-way video chat (or phone, if you prefer).  We’ll carefully review all of your medical history, family history, and more. You’ll share and discuss all of your medical questions and concerns. You’ll go into detail about your diet, exercise, sleep, work, and the other important parts of your life. Our aim will be to really get to know you, like a doctor friend. Together we’ll develop a plan to monitor and manage your health, including, if appropriate, using connected devices (weight scales, blood pressure, heart rate, blood sugar) and apps (Runkeeper, Strava, Garmin Connect, MyFitnessPal, Fitbit, and more).

3) Have a Doctor “At-Hand” Who Really Knows You

Text your SteadyMD doctor anytime with any medical question or concern. Schedule a phone call or video chat.  They’ll instantly receive the health data that you share with them, including weight, blood sugar, blood pressure, diet, running stats, and other output from connected devices and apps that you may use.  If you have a medical issue, they will be there to talk with you, assess the situation, listen to your concerns, and oversee and monitor your care.  If needed, they will help you find the right specialist in your area, brief that specialist on your situation, set you up with an appointment, and review the results with you.

4) All Your Records and Activity in One Place, Online

We will also retrieve your health records from past doctors and hospitals (with your permission, of course).

In Partnership With

Like most runners, I have injuries that pop up from time to time, but I also have a full-time job and a busy life. I love the idea of being treated by a doctor who not only can see me remotely, wherever in the world I may be, but who also has the expertise to assess and treat injuries specific to my sport.

Common Questions

Who Is Dr. Mark Cucuzzella?

I am a board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Professor at West Virginia University School of Medicine, focused on keeping runners fit and healthy through better movement, training, and nutrition.

I have been a competitive runner for over 30 years, with more than 100 marathon and ultramarathon finishes. My marathon best is 2 hours and 24 minutes and I am a two-time winner of the Air Force Marathon.  I continue to compete as a national-level Masters runner and I have run sub-3-hour finishing times for 30 consecutive years.

Many of you know me from my appearances in running publications, podcasts, videos, and workshops. I am an early adopter of “natural running” as the Director of the Natural Running Center, Healthy Running Continuing Education, USAF Efficient Running Project (mobile course, here), and the owner of Two Rivers Treads, the nation’s first minimalist shoe store for runners.

Who Is Dr. Josh Emdur?

I am a board-certified Family Medicine physician (practicing for over 10 years) and 2:56 marathoner with a passion for providing personal, high value medical care that embraces the use of technology.

My friends and family have texted me their medical questions on a daily basis for years (despite having their own respective doctors). It is this concept that gave me the idea to start a virtual primary care practice. Now with SteadyMD everyone can benefit from a having a doctor that really knows them, understands their lifestyle, goals, and passions at their fingertips.

I live in Boulder, Colorado, and when I am not doctoring I can be found outside with my wife, two sons, and two dogs. I am an avid trail runner, mountaineer, backcountry skier, and photographer. I look forward to partnering with you in an effort to improve your health and performance.

Why Are We Doing This?

To provide better care for our patients.

Our healthcare system is broken. The typical primary care doctor has between 2,000 and 5,000 patients. Seriously. That’s not a typo. The average patient visit? 15 minutes. You find a doctor, make an appointment (sometimes several weeks out), drive to the doctor’s office, wait in the waiting room, wait in the exam room, finally see the doctor, have a short visit, leave, drive home. Hope that you’re billed fairly / correctly.

The moment the doctor sees you is the first moment he thinks about you.  And the moment you leave he stops thinking about you. Why? He needs to see about 30 patients per day to meet his quota / make a decent living.

And what if you have a follow-up question? What if you forgot to ask something? What if something happens a few days later?

We’re proud to be pioneering this completely new model of primary care.  With modern technology, we can focus on a limited number of patients, anywhere in the world, and provide really great care. We can be your health partner for the long-term, in the same way that you might have an accountant or financial advisor.

We’re starting this with Dr. Josh. Next, we hope to expand this across the country with the participation of many other doctors who are also passionate runners.  We think we can realistically improve healthcare in this country in a way that is actually achievable today without massive healthcare reform. An improvement that would provide better care for most Americans: online anytime with the same doctor, in-person when you need it (via the current system of 15 minute appointments with a doctor that doesn’t know you, wasted time in waiting room, little follow up, frustration with health insurance).

When Will You Start Taking Patients Online?

We’ve already started! We’re taking on just a small number of patients each week and we’re ramping up slowly and carefully. After you reserve your spot, we can give you a better sense of when we can have our first appointment together.

How Much Will This Cost?

Membership costs $79 per month and requires a 12 month commitment (like a gym membership). This allows us to dedicate our time and attention to a limited number of patients. All memberships include unlimited text messaging, phone call appointments, and video chat appointments. No extra fees, no co-pays.

Will My Health Insurance Pay The Membership Fee?

No. Insurance companies don’t yet reimburse for this type of service. Plus, we really like the idea of having a more direct economic relationship between you, the patient, and us, the doctors, without all of the typical complications.

Does This Replace My Health Insurance?

No. You’ll still want to keep your health insurance (for seeing specialists, for catastrophic events, for labs, etc.). We may refer you, if needed, to get lab tests done or to a specialist in your area to be seen in-person. You would want to run that visit through your insurance.

Some patients may choose to downgrade their health insurance plan (e.g. from Blue Shield Gold to Silver) and augment their plan with this service. In many cases, you can save money and (in our opinion) get better care.

How Does This Compare to Other Concierge Doctor Services?

Most traditional concierge doctors charge between $2,000 and $5,000 per year and are setup to see patients in-person at their office. Our service is much more affordable and we are fully-geared to efficiently communicate with you regularly via phone, text, and video chat. Also, we can continuously monitor your diet, exercise, and vital body measurements. And, of course, we can take patients anywhere in the country!

What is SteadyMD?

SteadyMD is the company we’ve partnered with to design this service and bring it to patients everywhere. We’re really excited about it. We’ve got a team of people behind us working on this and improving it every day!

Is This Safe and Private?

Yes. The entire SteadyMD system is secure and HIPAA compliant (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) to ensure that communication between you and your SteadyMD doctor remains a private matter between the two of you. Your information is stored on secure servers and we take every measure to ensure your privacy and the safety of your data.

What is the Cancellation Policy?

Within the first 90 days, if you decide that the service is not for you, you may cancel your annual membership. You will only be charged for the months in which you used the service.
