Who Is Dr. Katie Bast?

Dr. Katie Bast is a board certified family physician and is a 2016 graduate of the Memorial Family Medicine Residency program at Memorial Hospital in South Bend Indiana.  She co-founded the very first medical practice in Indiana that is openly welcoming to the LGBTQ community. Katie did her medical training at Indiana University School of Medicine. She is a member of the GLMA (Gay and Lesbian Medical Association) and WPATH (World Professional Association for Trans Health).

Katie came to medicine later in life having had three children, taught childbirth classes, trained as a doula and then as a midwife. She ran an exclusively homebirth practice for many years. While in medical school she began to understand herself more clearly and embarked on her own coming out process during which she developed an interest in LGBTQ health. Soon thereafter, she was approached by a former midwife client and asked to be the physician for a transgender child and discovered a love for taking care of gender nonconforming people. She has experience in managing hormone replacement therapy, pubertal suppression, PrEP, HIV care as well as general health issues.

Why Am I Doing This?

To provide better care for my patients.

Our healthcare system is broken. The typical primary care doctor has between 2,000 and 5,000 patients. Seriously. That’s not a typo. The average patient visit? 15 minutes. You find a doctor, make an appointment (sometimes several weeks out), drive to the doctor’s office, wait in the waiting room, wait in the exam room, finally see the doctor, have a short visit, leave, drive home. Hope that you’re billed fairly / correctly.

The moment the doctor sees you is the first moment that doctor thinks about you.  And the moment you leave they stop thinking about you. Why? The doctor needs to see about 30 patients per day to meet their quota / make a decent living.

And what if you have a follow-up question? What if you forgot to ask something? What if something happens a few days later?

I am proud to be pioneering a completely new model of primary care.  With modern technology, I can focus on a limited number of patients, anywhere in the world, and provide really great care. I can be your health partner for the long-term, in the same way that you might have an accountant or financial advisor.

I am starting by doing this myself personally. Next, I hope to expand this across the country with the participation of many other doctors.  I think we can realistically improve healthcare in this country in a way that is actually achievable today without massive healthcare reform. An improvement that would provide better care for most Americans: online anytime with the same doctor, in-person when you need it (via the current system of 15 minute appointments with a doctor that doesn’t know you, wasted time in waiting room, little follow up, frustration with health insurance).

How’s This Going To Work?

1) Reserve Your Spot

Provide your info and put your credit card on file. When I’m ready to take you on as a patient, I’ll let you know. Your credit card won’t be charged until after you’ve had your first online appointment with me.

2) Have Your First Appointment

We’ll spend about an hour talking via two-way video chat (or phone, if you prefer).  We’ll carefully review all of your medical history, family history, and more. You’ll share and discuss all of your medical questions and concerns. You’ll go into detail about your diet, exercise, sleep, work, and the other important parts of your life. My aim will be to really get to know you, like a doctor friend. Together we’ll develop a plan to monitor and manage your health, including, if appropriate, using connected devices (weight scales, blood pressure, heart rate, blood sugar) and apps (MyFitnessPal, Fitbit, Runkeeper, Strava, StrongLifts, Strong and more).

3) Have a Doctor “At-Hand” Who Really Knows You

Text me anytime with any medical question or concern. Schedule a phone call or video chat.  I’ll instantly receive the health data that you share with me, including weight, blood sugar, blood pressure, diet, and other output from connected devices and apps that you may use.  If you have a medical issue, I will be there to talk with you, assess the situation, listen to your concerns, and oversee and monitor your care.  If needed, I will help you find the right specialist in your area, brief that specialist on your situation, set you up with an appointment, and review the results with you.

4) All Your Records and Activity in One Place, Online

I will also retrieve your health records from past doctors and hospitals (with your permission, of course).

When Will You Start Taking Patients Online?

I’ve already started! I’m taking on just a small number of patients each week and I’m ramping up slowly and carefully. After you reserve your spot, I can give you a better sense of when we can have our first appointment together.

How Much Will This Cost?

Memberships cost $79 per month and require a 12 month commitment (like a gym membership). This allows me to dedicate my time and attention to a limited number of patients. All memberships include unlimited text messaging, phone call appointments, and video chat appointments. No extra fees, no co-pays.

Will My Health Insurance Pay The Membership Fee?

No. Insurance companies don’t yet reimburse for this type of service. Plus, I really like the idea of having a more direct economic relationship between you, the patient, and me, the doctor, without all of the typical complications.

Does This Replace My Health Insurance?

No. You’ll still want to keep your health insurance (for seeing specialists, for catastrophic events, for labs, etc.). I may refer you, if needed, to get lab tests done or to a specialist in your area to be seen in-person. You would want to run that visit through your insurance.

Some patients may choose to downgrade their health insurance plan (e.g. from Blue Shield Gold to Silver) and augment their plan with my service. In many cases, you can save money and (in my opinion) get better care.

How Does This Compare to Other Concierge Doctor Services?

Most traditional concierge doctors charge between $2,000 and $5,000 per year and are setup to see patients in-person at their office. Our service is much more affordable and I am fully-geared to efficiently communicate with you regularly via phone, text, and video chat. Also, I can continuously monitor your diet, exercise, and vital body measurements. And, of course, I can take patients anywhere in the country!
